The Ku Klux Klan, Ronald Reagan, and, for most of its history, the NRA all worked to control guns. The Founding Fathers? They required gun ownership—and regulated it. And no group has more fiercely advocated the right to bear loaded weapons in public than the Black Panthers—the true pioneers of the modern pro-gun movement. In the battle over gun rights in America, both sides have distorted history and the law, and there’s no resolution in sight.

The next time you see Barack Obama gliding into a White House press conference, take note of that jazzy walk. It is a dead ringer for the strut that was the bearing of choice among inner-city cool guys in the 1960s, when Barry Obama was still a tyke growing up in the exotic precincts of Hawaii and Indonesia. The Obama glide represents his embrace of a black aesthetic that was not his by circumstance of birth. It speaks on an intimate frequency to African-American men, who have been smiling in recognition and rating it for style ever since he stepped into the national spotlight. President Obama is acutely aware of how to deploy the physical self to excellent effect. If we looked back closely at 2008, we would no doubt notice him amping up the glide for black audiences and dialing it back elsewhere.

Instead of politics as an avenue for service, it became a road to wealth. Instead of the means to define the national interest, it became a career and a stepping stone to behind the scenes influence. Instead of a noble ideal, it became a battleground for hard core ideologues looking for a fight. I am not naive. There have always been cynics, maneuverers, and hacks in American politics. But they were no more than hangers-on and bottom-feeders, not the mainstream practitioners.

President Barack Obama’s approval rating has hit its highest point in two years—60 %—and more than half of Americans now say he deserves to be re-elected, according to an Associated Press poll taken after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden…In worrisome signs for Republicans, the president’s standing improved not just on foreign policy but also on the economy, and independent Americans — a key voting bloc in the November 2012 presidential election—caused the overall uptick in support by sliding back to Obama after fleeing for much of the past two years.
